Lots of sports or sporting skills require flexibility. In this lesson, you will understand what flexibility is and how you can measure your own flexibility. You will also test your core strength, another key component of fitness required for a variety of sports and sporting skills.

Before we start, take the quick quiz below to see if you already have an understanding of what flexibility and core strength is.

Plank challenge.

Adopt the position below. Start your timer - how long can you hold a plank for?

  • Bronze - 0-15 seconds
  • Silver - 15-30 seconds
  • Gold - 30-60 seconds
  • Platinum - 60+ seconds

Sit up bleep test.

The test involves carrying out continuous sit ups in time with the beeps (3 seconds apart). You must make it back up to the top (sitting position) by the time you hear the beep.

The test is over when you are no longer able to complete a sit up in time with the beep OR if your arms come away from your chest when you bring yourself back up to sitting position (see correct position below).

Platinum:

Create and complete your own core strength HIIT workout. Below are some example exercises you could include.

  • Sit ups
  • V-sits
  • Plank (hold on elbows)
  • High plank (on hands)
  • High plank with shoulder touches
  • Commandos (start in plank on elbows then push up to hands. repeat)
  • Ankle touches
  • Leg raises
  • Scissor kicks

Choose 4-6 exercises and try to complete 2 rounds!
